please no. please.

An American Airlines Airbus left JFK this morning headed for Santo Domingo. It crashed in Queens. No one knows yet what caused the crash, but everyone is afraid. People at the hospital, where I was this morning, were huddling around radios, hoping for shreds of news.

I grabbed a cab home. It was driven by a shaking man trying to reach his brother in Queens. I guess the cell network is down or overloaded. I offered to put a message online for his brother to call him, but he said he was going home to get online himself. I reached through the partition and just held his hand for a moment. "God bless you," he said. It was very surreal. We are a different country than we were two months and two days ago.

As I sit here, I can hear planes going by overhead to or from Logan Airport. I sit very still until the sound of the engines fades into ordinary city noise.

As usual, I'm following the story on MetaFilter.
